Bedeutung: Die Lyrics zu "I Am The Lion" werden aus 2 verschiedenen Perspektiven gesungen.

Der Refrain wird aus meiner Sicht als hilflose, abhängige Seele geschrieben. Es ist ein schlimmes Gefühl, von seiner Sucht kontrolliert zu werden und überzeugt zu sein, dass man sie nicht überwinden kann. Diese Laster schaden nicht nur Dir selbst, sondern sie zerstören langsam alle Bereiche Deines Lebens. Abhängigkeit läßt uns den wahren Sinn unseres Daseins vergessen, denn im Bann unserer Süchte sind wir nicht wir selbst.

Alle anderen Textphrasen von "I Am The Lion" sind aus Gottes Sichtweise geschrieben, der uns dabei zusieht, wie wir uns selbst zerstören. Würde Gott uns immer aus den Tiefen unseren Lebens retten, für die wir selbst verantwortlich sind, hätten wir keine Möglichkeit zu wachsen und zu lernen. Nicht der Teufel ist stark, sondern wir sind schwach, wenn wir auf uns alleine gestellt sind. Erst, wenn uns bewußt wird, wie schwach wir eigentlich sind und die Überzeugung verlieren, uns selbst retten zu können, wird Gott sich zeigen, alles in Fetzen reißen und uns ein neues Herz verschaffen.

Bedeutung: Dieser Song handelt von der Suche nach Hoffnung in einer sterbenden Welt. Während sich weltweit die Nationen bekämpfen, ist die einzige Konstante in unserem Leben die Liebe Christi - und das sogar an der Schwelle des Todes. Der einzige Trost, den wir erwarten können - während Kriege die Menschen gegeneinander aufstacheln - ist das Versprechen der Treue Gottes. Ich habe diese Lyrics als eine Erinnerung an den Tag geschrieben, an welchem Gott den Himmel ausreißen wird und Unrecht in Recht verwandelt.

"Crowns":

Bedeutung: Wenn Ihr jemals den Film "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" gesehen habt, könnt Ihr Euch sicherlich an diese Szene aus dem Film erinnern:



Diese Szene entspricht genau der Vision, die ich beim Schreiben der Lyrics zu "Crowns" (Kronen) hatte. Delmar (aus dem Video Clip) mag noch so kindisch sein, aber seine begeisterte Überzeugung, irgendwann von seinen Sünden losgesprochen zu werden, ist für mich einfach wunderschön. Die Symbolik einer Taufe ist für mich der ausdruckvollste Weg, Heil und Erlösung zu vermitteln. Die 3 Jungs aus dem Video sind wie erstarrt, als diese Gemeinde an Ihnen vorbeizieht und "Down To The River To Pray" singt. Daher frage ich mich sehr häufig, ob unsere Songs und unser Glauben eine ausreichende Reflektion Christi darstellen und zumindest Menschen dazubringen, Ihre Lebensweisen zu überdenken. Das können wir nur erreichen, indem wir unsere weltlichen "Götzen" loswerden, unseren Stolz und unsere Kronen, um Christus durch uns singen zu lassen. Taufen symbolisieren eine neue Schöpfung und der Song dazu wird durch uns von Christus gesungen.

The Wishing Well:

Bedeutung: "The Wishing Well" (Der Wunschbrunnen) ist textlich anders als die anderen Songs des Albums. Er ist der einzige Song von "The Godmachine", in dem es keine Hoffnung auf Erlösung gibt. Ich habe die Lyrics geschrieben, nachdem ich den Film "Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind" (Geständnisse) gesehen habe. Ich bin mitten während des Films eingeschlafen und wurde am erst nach dem Ende des Films, als bereits die Credits gezeigt wurden, durch die begleitende, tief-traurige Klaviermusik geweckt. Dieser Song hat mich dann heftig runtergezogen, aber dennoch nicht mehr losgelassen. Hört ihn Euch mal an - der Song heißt "Going Crazy, Coast To Coast" und er ist von Alex Wurman.

Kurz nachdem ich diesen Song gehört habe, habe ich angefangen, die Lyrics und das Konzept zu "The Wishing Well" zu schreiben. Der Song handelt von einem Mann, der Geldstücke ins Meer wirft und sich wünscht, reicher, schöner, glücklicher,... zu sein. Er ist mit sich selbst und dem, was ihm gegeben wurde, komplett unzufrieden. Er bedauert so sehr, er selbst zu sein und ist bald an dem Punkt angelangt, an dem er beinahe seine Identität verliert. Am Ende des Songs findet eine Unterhaltung zwischen dem Mann und dem Teufel statt, in dem die beiden sich darum streiten, wer von beiden das Leben des Mannes kontrolliert. Es ist die klassische Idee, seine Seele an den Teufel zu verkaufen, um dadurch zu profitieren. Aber sogar dem Teufel sind die Wünsche des Mannes zu größenwahnsinnig, da dieser sich abgrundtief haßt, da er sein Leben verschwendet hat. Und der Teufel ermahnt ihn zum Schluss "Du willst doch nur jemand komplett anderes sein, als Du selbst".
